← Three short discoveries on WatWat
A corridor of shelving inside the Vatican archive
Belief

For centuries the institution carried the title Vatican Secret Archives, which is the name most people still use and the one every conspiracy relies on. Pope Francis dropped it in 2019. The explanation turns on what a single Latin word meant when the archive was founded.

From observation

Nothing, in the modern sense. The Latin comes from secernere, meaning to separate or set apart, and described an archive kept separate from the others and reserved for the pontiff and his appointed officials. Leo XIII opened the doors to scholars in 1881, and it is now one of the most famous history research centers in the world.

The , the Archivio Apostolico Vaticano, preserves the deeds and documents related to the government of the Universal Church. It serves the Roman Pontiff and the Holy See first, and offers its services to scholars of all faiths from all nations second.

The famous name was never a claim of concealment. From the mid-17th century the title Vatican Secret Archives came into common use, stressing that this was a collection concentrated in one place from several curial offices. The Latin secretum means separate and reserved rather than hidden.

The scale is physical. The documentary heritage spans about twelve centuries and consists of over 600 . It sits on over 85 linear kilometers of shelving, some of it in a two-storey underground bunker beneath the Cortile della Pigna of the Vatican Museums.

Opening came in stages and continues. Leo XIII opened the doors to scholars in 1881, and a practice established in 1924 grants free access to documents . That currently runs up to the end of Pius XII in October 1958. Specific later material has been released by decision, including the Second Vatican Council archives and one commission fond running to 1989.

wat. Secretum meant set apart, not hidden.

A mistranslation kept alive for three centuries did more for the mythology than any locked door could.

How do we know?

The archive’s own account explains the original name, the 2019 motu proprio that restored it, the scale of the holdings and the rule governing access.

From observationEstablished knowledge

What is still unknown

Access is still bounded by date rather than open, and the institution is describing itself.
