Creative writing demands both flow and criticism, and those are two things that are hard to do at once. Experienced and novice poets wrote and revised poetry inside a brain scanner, so the two stages could be separated. What happened in each?
They swap, rather than switching on. During the frontal systems weakened relatively, and during they came back on. The experts showed a stronger release of control while generating, and their is not a different network from the novices’. So expertise moved the timing of the same system rather than recruiting another one.
The problem being solved here is a problem of timing. Creative writing demands two things that are hard to do at once: to produce freely, and then to judge severely. So the task in the scanner was deliberately split into two stages, production and then correction, instead of asking participants to write a poem and seeing what happens.
That separation gave an orderly picture. A medial prefrontal region was active in both stages, while the executive control systems, the ones that monitor and correct, weakened relatively during production and came back on during revision. So there is no single creativity switch but states of activation that alternate.
The comparison between experts and novices sharpened it. In experienced poets the release of control during generation was stronger, which fits the idea that skill includes the ability to silence criticism for a defined period. Even so, there is no different network in the experts, but the same system in a different pattern of activation.
What does not follow is that criticism should be switched off. The practical suggestion is the opposite: give it its own time, instead of applying it to every line as the line is written. And the caveat is technical and real, since a brain scan constrains the posture and the duration of the task, and a link between activity and rated quality does not explain creativity on its own.
