← Three short discoveries on WatWat
A dense grove of twisting trees in daylight, India
Belief

Scattered through the Western Ghats in India are that communities have protected for generations on religious grounds. They are small and ringed by coffee fields, and by every accepted ecological rule they ought to be emptying of species. What actually happens in them?

From observation

They hold a high diversity of species. The work asked what explains the differences between the groves. a grove matters no less than its size: a grove ringed by varied, keeps more species than a grove ringed by an open field. , in other words, is set partly outside the fence that is not there.

Scattered through the Western Ghats in India are groves that communities have protected on religious grounds for generations, with no ranger and no fence. They are small and ringed by coffee fields, and they still hold a high diversity of species.

The question examined is not whether they work but what explains the differences between them, so the comparison runs between groves rather than between a grove and a field.

The answer was a surprise: the landscape surrounding a grove matters no less than its size. A grove ringed by varied, shaded agriculture keeps more species than a grove ringed by an open field.

The logic is that a small patch is not a closed system. Birds, insects and seeds cross it, and an open field works as a barrier while a shaded plantation works as a corridor. Conservation tends to focus on the reserve itself, and here the fate of a forest patch turned out to depend partly on what happens outside it. The work covered one coffee-growing region, and groves elsewhere differ in size, in tradition and in development pressure.

wat. A small sacred grove can hold a high diversity of species, and what grows in the fields around it affects that no less than its size.

How do we know?

The researchers surveyed species diversity inside different groves, and mapped the land uses around each one in parallel. Comparing the two is what exposed the role of the surroundings.

What is still unknown

The work was carried out in one coffee-growing region of India. Sacred groves elsewhere differ in size, in tradition and in the development pressure around them.
