In 1912 the palaeontologist Arthur Smith Woodward and the amateur antiquarian Charles Dawson announced a fossil that supposedly linked apes and humans, , Dawson’s dawn man. The publication generated huge interest from scientists and the public alike. Its celebrity has long since been overshadowed by its infamy.
One, on the evidence. Re-evaluating the fossils with DNA analysis, high-precision measurements, spectroscopy and , the authors found it highly likely that a single orang-utan specimen and at least two human specimens were used. The same runs through the whole assemblage, linking Piltdown I and to Charles Dawson.
In 1912 Arthur Smith Woodward and Charles Dawson announced the discovery of a fossil that supposedly provided a link between apes and humans, named Eoanthropus dawsoni. The publication generated huge interest from scientists and from the general public.
The fame curdled. Piltdown man’s initial celebrity has long been overshadowed by its subsequent infamy as one of the most famous scientific frauds in history, and the open question became how many hands had made it.
The re-evaluation used methods unavailable to the original audience. DNA analyses, high-precision measurements, spectroscopy and virtual anthropology together show it is highly likely that a single orang-utan specimen and at least two human specimens were used to create the fakes.
What identifies the forger is consistency. The same modus operandi was found throughout the assemblage, which links all specimens from the Piltdown I and Piltdown II sites to Charles Dawson. The authors offer the episode as a caution against being led by preconceived ideas.
wat. One orang-utan jaw, two human skulls, and the same brown stain on all of them.
wat wat
The forgery misdirected the course of anthropology for decades, which is a long time for a false answer to sit in the textbooks.
How do we know?
De Groote and colleagues applied modern methods to the surviving specimens and compared how each had been prepared, rather than arguing from who had access to the site.
What is still unknown
Whether Dawson acted alone remains uncertain; the consistency of method is what points at one hand.
