The survey found the dark experience itself was a central factor in attitudes, and that does not license the conclusion that every visitor is after a shock.

A visit to a difficult site is not necessarily a search for entertainment. It can come from a wish to understand an event, to remember people, or to face a troubling past.
How do we know?
Participants filled in questionnaires about motives, attitudes and intention to visit; the authors examined the relationships between them in a statistical model.
What is still unknown
The questionnaire measured intentions and self-report rather than following behavior at any particular site; different sites can call up very different motives.
