A fall on the market is a number on a screen, and the distance between it and the body looks large. Daily data on were joined to admission records from every hospital in California across decades. What did the authors find?
More admissions, the same day. The data cover 1983 to 2011, and when the market fell more admissions were recorded, especially for anxiety, and severe depression. The relationship appeared on the day itself. This is evidence that financial worry can be linked to immediate distress; it does not say that everyone admitted held shares, or that the index alone caused an admission.
The advantage of a large database over years is the ability to see whether the relationship recurs on different days, rather than only around one famous crisis.
The strongest relationship was with admissions for mental health conditions. The immediate timing fits the possibility that anxiety about expectations for the future has an effect already in the present.
But admission data are not personal interviews: we do not know which patients watched the market, who held shares and who was dealing with something else entirely that day.
So the card describes found at the level of a population, between an and a hospital record. It is not a tool for predicting individual risk or for deciding that a market fall was the cause of any particular admission.
wat. In California, days when the share market fell came with more psychiatric admissions on the day itself.

A dry economic index can be tied to human distress in real time, and a correlation still has to be told apart from a cause.
How do we know?
The work compared stock market returns day by day with patient records from hospitals in California across nearly three decades.
What is still unknown
The data do not reveal for each patient whether they held shares or were exposed to market news; other factors may vary on the same days.
